After the completion of the 2016 Congress Call for Papers, which described the aims of the sessions, and the Congress Planning, which reported the Sessions selected by the Congress Committee, the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence advances with the planning for its 4 sponsored and co-sponsored sessions for the next International Congress on Medieval Studies.

Now we announce the programs. The Congress Schedule reveals the time- and room-assignments. Also, we begin to publish Abstracts of the papers, as their authors might wish.

The next Congress will be the eleventh year of our co-sponsorship with the Societas Magica, the third year of co-sponsorship with the Center for Medieval and Early Modern Studies at the University of Florida, and the second year of co-sponsorship with the Index of Christian Art at Princeton University.

Our 2014 and 2015 sessions and receptions with these organizations are illustrated in the 2014 Congress Report and 2015 Congress Report. The history of our sponsorships and co-sponsorships at the Congress is recorded for our Sponsored Sessions and Co-Sponsored Congress Sessions, and in our blog.

2016 Congress Events Proposed

Events to be Sponsored and Co-Sponsored
by the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence
at the 2016 International Congress on Medieval Studies (12–15 May)

For the 51st International Congress on Medieval Studies at Kalamazoo next May, the Research Group hopes to sponsor and co-sponsor Sessions, as part of our continuing activities at the Congress. For example, at the 50th International Congress on Medieval Studies, the Research Group had 2 sponsored and 3 co-sponsored Sessions, plus a Business Meeting and co-sponsored Reception.

As before, we seek to co-sponsor sessions in 2016 with the Societas Magica (since 2006) and with the Center for Medieval and Early Modern Studies at the University of Florida (since 2014). During and after the 50th Congress, we collectively considered plans for sessions for next year. By the 1 June deadline, the Research Group submitted its proposal for sessions to the Congress Committee. We hope for approval for these plans.

For the 50th Congress, the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence (RGME) prepares five Sessions to celebrate a wide range of interests and explorations in the realms of medieval, early modern, and related studies. We continue sponsorships and co-sponsorships of sessions, designed to showcase the work of younger, independent, and established scholars and teachers alike, in a constructive interchange between areas of expertise and spans of experience.

We invite proposals for papers for the 2015 Sessions. Please send your proposed title and abstract directly to the session organizers by 15 September 2014, along with the completed Congress Participant Information Form (PIF) [no longer online, following the deadline]. The “Save the Date” Announcement (Save the Date 16-17 May 2014) set the stage by describing the intentions and scope of the subject. To sum up:

This symposium explored the workings of workshops, as revealed through the traces of artists, craftsmen, scribes, authors, editors, printers, and patrons, across a wide range of subjects, regions, and materials, in transitions from classical antiquity and early Christianity through the long Middle Ages and thence to the early modern period and beyond. We seek to discern how these editorial agents of whatever kind shaped and reshaped materials — tangible and intangible — in transmitting the legacy of the past, often in the process to form works which perhaps seemed more viable in changing times, expectations, and systems of belief. Memory may hold a significant place among the materials, processes, and forces at work in the processes of collecting, shaping, and, in many cases, transforming complex bodies of evidence in a robust or precarious voyage from the past.

The Research Group on Manuscript Evidence warmly thank the Sponsors, Donors, and Contributors to the Symposium, which formed part of the celebrations for our 2014 Anniversary Year. 2014 Congress Announced

We announce the program for our sponsored and co-sponsored sessions at the next International Congress on Medieval Studies, when we will celebrate our anniversary year, along with that of one of our co-sponsors, the Societas Magica. 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the Societas Magica. For the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence, it marks our 15th anniversary as a nonprofit educational organization and our 25th anniversary as an international scholarly society. This is the ninth year of our co-sponsorship with the Societas Magica, and the first year of co-sponsorship with the Center for Medieval and Early Modern Studies at the University of Florida. The Events at this Congress celebrate these shared accomplishments.

This year, with the transition to our second, updated website (begun in 2014 and completed in 2015), we began to issue the announcements for a given Congress in a series of blogposts, rather than overwriting its statements, which had left only the final state in view. Here we offer the Congress Announced, with more to come.

At the 2007 Congress, the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence sponsored one Session, and co-sponsored one Session with the Societas Magica, in the second consecutive year of this co-sponsorship.

For this Congress, moreover, the Research Group began the tradition of publishing the Abstracts for its Sponsored Sessions on its official website, which appeared online in this year. And so began the possibility of posting online announcements and updates for the programs of our Sessions and other Events at the Congresses from this year onward. The series appears in the list of our Congress Activities and our blog about the International Congress on Medieval Studies.

2006 Congress

At the 2006 Congress, the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence not only sponsored one session, but also, for the first time, co-sponsored sessions with another organization, the Societas Magica.

This collaboration arose from the introduction at the previous year’s Congress between the Director of the Research Group (Mildred Budny) and the President of the Societas Magica (Claire Fanger) by Robert Mathiesen, Trustee of the Research Group and co-Founder of the Societas Magica. Over time, as the collaboration continued across the years, as reported, for example, in our Congress Archive, it remains clear that this collaboration makes long-term sense.
