The scope, as described by the Newberry Library:

This exhibition takes a groundbreaking look at the little-known history of printing on fabric from the fifteenth century to the present. Some of the earliest examples were devotional images tied to the Catholic relics known as the Shroud of Turin and Veronica’s Veil. Traditionally interpreted as a metaphor for printmaking, these contact prints inspired countless fabric impressions.

The objects gather artworks, books, broadsides, and maps produced and “prized as unique luxury editions of works normally printed on paper”. The substitution of fabrics for the customary paper involved great cost, often with the use of imported materials. “Impressive Textiles: Printing on Fabric also investigates the intentional choices of the printers and commissioners, some of whom were female, and shows how the origins of these lavish materials reflected the global world of the early modern textile economy.”

Suzanne will describe the origins and development of the plan for the exhibition and its global scope for a subject of worldwide interest.
