Call for Papers

Further update: With the close of the Call for Papers, we have evaluated the proposals received, and chosen the Programs for all the Sessions, both sponsored and co-sponsored. Upon submitting those Programs to the Congress Committee, we prepare an update for our website, which, when ready, will appear as our 2018 Congress Program.]

With the achievement of our Activities at the 2017 International Congress on Medieval Studies, as announced in our 2017 Congress Program, we both give a 2017 Congress Report and begin to prepare a special Behind the Scenes Report (in preparation).

(Please note: Illness and a death in the family have impeded these stages, so please watch this space and our Facebook Page for notice of the appearance of that Extra Report.)

Now we proceed to preparations for the 2018 Congress. All but one of our Session Proposals have been accepted, so that we progress to their Call for Papers. Shame about the refusal for one proposal. It would have been great. (Our opinion.)

The Congress Committee now publishes the full 2017 Call for Papers for 52nd ICMS, with the list of Session Titles and Sponsors. Here we announce our 5 co-sponsored Sessions and describe their aims.

As in recent years, we co-sponsor Sessions with the Societas Magica (3 Sessions). But not, because of that refusal (Boo Hoo!) can there be a session co-sponsored with the Center for Medieval and Early Modern Studies at the University of Florida.

It will be the 13th year of co-sponsorship with the Societas Magica, and it would have been the 5th year with the Center for Medieval and Early Modern Studies. Both collaborations are excellently collegial. (Fun, too!)

We report our Activities Accomplished

The time has happily come to report the successful accomplishment of this year’s Activities of the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence at the 2017 Congress.

Our Activities there mostly corresponded with their plans announced in the complete official Schedule for the 2017 International Congress on Medieval Studies, as well as in our posted (and updated) 2017 Congress Program for our 5 co-sponsored Sessions and other Activities — with some adjustments closer to the time. Some changes were known in time to report to the published Corrigenda (up to 5 May) for the Congress, and on our website. Others emerged at a last minute, and these changes are noted here.

How We Do It

Upon completion of last year’s International Congress on Medieval Studies, we gave both a 2016 Congress Report and a special Behind the Scenes Report (Also Known As “Doctor Who Done It”). Then we turned to preparing for this year’s Congress.

After our proposals for the 2017 sessions were accepted, our 2017 Call for Papers described the scope and aims of the sessions and invited proposals for their papers for consideration. Next, after the official closure of the Call for Papers on 15 September 2016, we selected the programs of the sessions, submitted them to the Congress Committee, and, in due course, announced these 2017 Congress Preparations. Then, as the full Program for the Congress became announced, we posted the Program for our Presence At The Congress, with some updates as they emerged.

As the preparations for the Congress shifted into that next phase, we also, as customary, posted the Abstracts for the Papers, as their authors permit. (Note that our site conveniently lists the published Abstracts not only for the individual years of the Congress, but also in the Indexes both by Author and by Year. Easy Peasy.)

Thus we invite you to discover, even at a distance across time and space, the subjects, aims, and accomplishments of the presenters at the Sessions. That is, even if You Were Not There, You Could Still Be There. Call it, if you wish, the Potential Power of the Word, as Time and Space Traveller.

Now for our 2017 Congress Report. P.S. Our camera disappeared partway through the Congress. Last sighted on the Friday afternoon in Schneider 1030, during our pair of Sessions co-sponsored with the Center for Medieval and Early Modern Studies at the University of Florida. If you happen to have found the camera, we would be glad for the gift of the pictures at the Congress on Days 1 and 2. The rest are secured in copies. Please let us know!

[Update: At our recent Open Business Meeting (see our 2017 International Congress on Medieval Studies Report), the organizer of these panels reported that the deadline for proposals for papers has been extended to 1 June. Please send your proposals to Justin Hastings, as described below. We hope to see you at the panels.]

The Research Group on Manuscript Evidence, in keeping with the 2017 M-MLA Convention’s theme of “Artists and Activists,” is sponsoring panels on manuscripts and printed books and the illuminators, scribes, editors, and other artists who created them and the scholars and readers who used them. The session invites all approaches, including textual, art historical, codicological, and paleographical.

Possible foci include but are by no means limited to:

Scriveners, the Book Trade, and Early Modern Printed Editions
Textual Transmission and Reception: Inscribing Alterity and Change
On the Margins: Glosses, Illustrations, and Illuminations

Interested panelists should send brief abstracts of no more than 300 words to the organizer by 5 April 2017:

A New Tradition

For information about the Events of the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence, to which these Sponsored Panels belong, please see our Events and Events Archive. For convenience, we distinguish between these Events elsewhere and our many Congress Activities over the years at the Annual International Congress on Medieval Studies, likewise with a Congress Archive, held at Western Michigan University each May in Kalamazoo.

Our Associate, Justin Hastings, generously offered to organize panels for the 2016 M-MLA Convention to be sponsored by the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence. The Call for Papers yielded not one, but two panels, with contributions spanning a wide range of materials, texts, periods, and regions. These sponsored panels represented the first time, apart from the Kalamazoo Congress, that the Research Group sponsored meetings within an existing conference held in North America, although we have co-organized and co-sponsored Events afresh in various centers in North America and elsewhere, as described in the Events Archive.

The plan to sponsor the 2017 Panels follows our first appearance as a Sponsor at the 2016 M-MLA Convention — with 2 Panels on Marginalia in Manuscripts and Books in response to the Call for Papers for 1 Panel alone. See the 2016 M-MLA Report for these Panels, with the published Abstracts of the Papers and a view of the Posters.

The continuation of the tradition of Permanent Panels at the M-MLA Convention is most welcome, and we thank our organizer, Justin Hastings, and the Midwest Modern Language Association. We congratulate Justin for his expert organizational skills and outstanding collegiality, and we applaud his willingness to continue to organize the panels for the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence.

Another First

This year, responding gladly to Justin’s initiative, we issue a Poster for the Call for Papers.

As customary, the design of the Poster corresponds with the Research Group’s Style Manifesto, and employs our very own copyright font Bembino — available freely for download, along with the booklet describing its reasons and range. (Tip: The next version of Bembino is advancing toward its launch very soon, in the next few weeks! Update: It is now available! See Bembino .)

Up to now, our Posters in recent years have accompanied our Congress Activities and Symposia, Colloquia, Workshops, and the like. Circulated at those events or activities, the Posters now illustrate the Pages or Posts devoted to them on our website. Also, a Gallery illustrates the sequence of our Posters on Display. They exemplify aspects of our multiple Layout Designs, which have a Gallery as well.

Sometimes, we issued a Poster for the Save-the-Date Announcement of an approaching Symposium. Those specimens likewise appear in the Poster Gallery. However, this is the first time for a Poster for the Call for Papers. Nice!

Often, from the 1993 Congress onward, the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence participates in the International Congress on Medieval Studies (ICMS) held annually at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo. The Research Group activities at the Congress take myriad forms.

Usually, now, we sponsor and co-sponsor Sessions with Papers, Responses, or a Panel Discussion. Sometimes the Session includes a Display of original manuscript and related materials. Occasionally we have provided a Photographic Exhibition of manuscript images and commentary. Some years call for special celebrations, with a Party or Reception, as with our Special Anniversary Year of 2014. Our practice also includes Trustees’ Meetings or Business Meetings, as appropriate; since 2015, our Open Business Meetings are listed in the Congress Schedule, with an assigned room and provided refreshments. The concise Agendas for these Meetings, which report on one page our activities, accomplishments, prospects, requirements, and vision, continue to be downloaded regularly from this website (so far for 2015 and 2016).

Our Congress Archive reports our Congress Activities for each year. Among them are Sponsored Sessions and Co-Sponsored Sessions, highlighting the different organizations in their own right.

These concerted activities did not arise, unlike Athena, fully formed. They took years of preparations, both in the development of an integrated approach to manuscript studies, and in the cultivation of fields of expertise, experts, scholars, students, and others interested in the study and promotion of better understanding the transmission of written materials through the ages. Some of this spadework occurred at the International Congress on Medieval Studies. We review its highlights here.

As in recent years, we co-sponsor Sessions with the Societas Magica (2 Sessions) and the Center for Medieval and Early Modern Studies at the University of Florida (2 Sessions). It will be the 12th year of co-sponsorship with the Societas Magica, and the fourth year with the Center for Medieval and Early Modern Studies. This year, for the first time, we also co-sponsor a Round-Table with a community of 5 other Co-Sponsors (including the Societas Magica), headed by AVISTA.

Also, like the 2016 Congress, we plan for

an Open Business Meeting and
a co-sponsored Reception with the Index of Christian Art at Princeton University.

Glimpses of our co-sponsored Receptions at the Congress appear in the souvenirs of our Celebrations and in the Reports for the individual Congresses (2016, 2015, and 2014 Anniversary).

The Agendas for our Open Business Meetings in both 2015 and 2016 serve as concise Reports for our Activities, Plans, and Desiderata.

‘Words & Deeds’ Symposium Report

With the smooth accomplishment of the Symposium on ‘Words & Deeds’ at Princeton University on 25–26 March 2016, it is time for the Report.

As is our custom, the Save-the-Date Announcement and the Poster(s) for the event, as well as the Program, circulated ahead of time (both in paper and online), in stages as they called for updates. They did so, for example, as the Sponsors gathered in number, and as the event initially intended for a day’s span extended into one and one-half days, to accommodate the increasing number of Speakers, Panelists, and Sessions.

[Note: We have now corrected the next link, for the Program Booklet. It should work correctly. If not, please let us know.]

The Program Booklet, containing both the Program and the Abstracts of Papers, made its debut, as is customary, on the day itself in print. In this case, the generous donation of so many images — some of which featured in our post announcing the event — encouraged us to include a greater number and to extend across a larger number of pages than ever before for one of our Symposia. Extraordinary.

Now we publish those materials online. In addition, the happy completion of the Symposium calls for a description of its character, account of certain changes in plan, and a celebration of its enthusiastic dedication of expertise and collegial discourse.

Recently, we have begun to gather interviews with experts who help — pro bono, of course — with our activities, events, publications, and other productions. (Starting here.) A series of interviews with our Graphic & Layout Designer is in the course of preparation. (He is shy, and works at many tasks, so it takes time to find the right time. Update: Now here.)

That our blog on Manuscript Studies may allow for some light-hearted views can be seen already, for example, in the installment on Manuscript Groupies.

Wonderful to learn about the people behind the scenes. Critters too.

The Research Group on Manuscript Evidence reports its activities accomplished at the 2016 International Congress on Medieval Studies, held at Kalamazoo, Michigan.

After the completion of

our Congress Planning, which reported the Sessions selected by the Congress Committee,
our 2016 Congress Call for Papers, which described the aims of the Sessions, and
our Congress Program, which set forth the schedule for our Sessions and other Activities
(together with the Abstracts of some Papers),

we now Report its achievements. They include the notice of a couple of late changes to the Program of individual Sessions, the unveiling — with the publication here — of both the Posters for our multiple activities at the Congress and an illustrated Program Booklet for a pair of co-sponsored Sessions, and other developments. These publications, as is our practice, are set in our copyright multilingual font Bembino and laid out in accordance with our Style Manifesto. You may view them below.
