Photograph \u00a9 Mildred Budny.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The papers delivered at the Symposium (at 14:00 \u2013 17:00), over which Professor Shuji Sato presided, gave an overview of methods and results applicable to many fields of medieval English studies.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Programme Booklet<\/strong> for the Congress as a whole publishes the Abstracts for the Papers for this session, with an introduction and some abstracts in Japanese (pages 7\u201410).\u00a0 We reproduce the abstracts in English here.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond I. Page&#8217;s paper considered the theme of <strong>&#8220;Back to the Manuscripts \u2014 Some Editorial Problems&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We are accustomed to meeting Old English texts in printed and edited versions, and it always comes as a surprise to meet for the first time the manuscript of a text we have long known in print.\u00a0 Editors have usually intervened, adapting the manuscript forms to their own ideas of punctuation and sentence structure, word division, lay-out and meaning.\u00a0 Sometimes these ideas are ill thought out, and represent traditional patterns of editing that need questioning.\u00a0 Interference in the manuscript, even with the best intentions, may mislead a reader, particularly one whose interests are not those of the editor.\u00a0 Historians may need an edition of a text different from that wanted by literary or linguistic students.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I propose to discuss a number of examples, comparing manuscript forms with those of the printed versions.\u00a0 I shall talk on aspects of MSS CCCC <a href=\"https:\/\/parker.stanford.edu\/parker\/catalog\/nz663nv2057\" target=\"_blank\">23<\/a> (Ker no. 31, a glossed <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prudentius\" target=\"_blank\">Prudentius<\/a>), CCCC <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170818093902\/https:\/\/parkerweb.stanford.edu\/parker\/actions\/manuscript_description_long_display.do?ms_no=173\" target=\"_blank\">173<\/a> (Ker no. 30, Anglo-Saxon Chronicle) and CCCC <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20100702040809\/http:\/\/parkerweb.stanford.edu\/parker\/actions\/manuscript_description_long_display.do?ms_no=557\" target=\"_blank\">557<\/a> (Ker no. 73, fragments of a homily on the legendary history of Christ&#8217;s cross).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">[Ker = N. Graham reported on <strong>&#8220;The Beginnings of Old English Studies:\u00a0 The Manuscript Evidence&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The study of Old English has a continuous history dating back to the sixteenth century.\u00a0 The Parker collection of Anglo-Saxon manuscripts has always been a principal resource for students of the language.\u00a0 This paper will describe how the pages of the manuscripts bear precious evidence of the aims and methods of some of the pioneers of Old English studies:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk\/details\/c\/F38636\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Talbot<\/a> (1505\u201358), prebend of Norwich Cathedral; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Joscelyn\" target=\"_blank\">John Joscelyn<\/a> (1529\u20131603), Matthew Parker&#8217;s secretary; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Matthew_Parker\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Parker<\/a> himself (1504\u201375); and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abraham_Wheelocke\" target=\"_blank\">Abraham Wheloc<\/a> (1593\u20131653), first Lecturer in Anglo-Saxon at Cambridge University.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The evidence includes annotations, collations, restorations of lost passages, transcripts, glosses, and index notes.\u00a0 I shall give examples from <a href=\"https:\/\/parker.stanford.edu\/parker\/catalog\/qd527zm3425\" target=\"_blank\">MS 41<\/a>, the Corpus Old English Bede; <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20100628100452\/http:\/\/parkerweb.stanford.edu\/parker\/actions\/manuscript_description_long_display.do?ms_no=144\" target=\"_blank\">MS 144<\/a>, the Corpus Glossary; <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170818093902\/https:\/\/parkerweb.stanford.edu\/parker\/actions\/manuscript_description_long_display.do?ms_no=173\" target=\"_blank\">MS 173<\/a>, the Parker Chronicle; <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170818093902\/https:\/\/parkerweb.stanford.edu\/parker\/actions\/manuscript_description_long_display.do?ms_no=173\" target=\"_blank\">MS 173<\/a>, a collection of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%86lfric_of_Eynsham\" target=\"_blank\">Aelfrician<\/a> homilies bound with a bilingual Latin \u2013 Old English text of the Rule of St Benedict; <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20100630092610\/http:\/\/parkerweb.stanford.edu\/parker\/actions\/manuscript_description_long_display.do?ms_no=201\" target=\"_blank\">MS 201<\/a>, a miscellany of ecclesiastical and secular texts including several associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wulfstan_(died_1023)\" target=\"_blank\">Wulfstan<\/a>; and <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120424102419\/http:\/\/parkerweb.stanford.edu\/parker\/actions\/manuscript_description_long_display.do?ms_no=383\" target=\"_blank\">MS 383<\/a>, a collection of Anglo-Saxon legal texts.\u00a0 These manuscripts will be amply illustrated by slides and photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Tadao Kubouchi considered <strong>&#8220;Punctuation in Some Manuscripts of \u00c6lfric and Wulfstan<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n(including Corpus Christi College, MSS <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20100628012839\/http:\/\/parkerweb.stanford.edu\/parker\/actions\/manuscript_description_long_display.do?ms_no=190\" target=\"_blank\">190<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20100630092610\/http:\/\/parkerweb.stanford.edu\/parker\/actions\/manuscript_description_long_display.do?ms_no=201\" target=\"_blank\">201<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Tim Graham read Nicholas Hadgraft&#8217;s paper on <strong>&#8220;Conservation of Manuscripts&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The paper will be about techniques of conserving western manuscripts, and ethical considerations which face the conservator.\u00a0 It will discuss the problems arising from the cockling of vellum and methods for reducing the distortion of leaves.\u00a0 The ethical considerations discussed would include the question of how far the conservator is justified in intervening in a manuscript.\u00a0 He must appreciate it as a historical artefact bearing evidence from several centuries.\u00a0 He must therefore be aware of the danger of removing or altering evidence which may be important to scholars and researchers from various academic disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>Shuji Sato surveyed <strong>&#8220;The Physical Description&#8221;<\/strong> of Corpus Christi College, MS 173.<\/p>\n<p>Leslie J. French explored <strong>&#8220;Recording:\u00a0 Evidence <em>versus<\/em> Interpretation&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The need to record and present results produced by members of the Research Group has led to developments and innovations in the use of computers.\u00a0 Advances in computer typesetting are used to distinguish evidence from its interpretation at multiple levels.\u00a0 The multiple stages of the recording process will be shown.\u00a0 These stages more from a &#8220;depiction&#8221; of a manuscript page, using typography as graphics, through a transcription, semi-diplomatic edition, normalised edition, translation and commentary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The choices for particular manuscripts will be discussed, along with their relevance for textual scholars.\u00a0 Examples will include the Parker Chronicle, the Corpus Alfredian Pastoral Care, the Corpus Glossary and Archbishop Wulfstan&#8217;s <em>Sermo ad Anglo<\/em>s (Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, MSS 173B, 12, 144 and 201) from the forthcoming <em>Pages from Anglo-Saxon Manuscripts:\u00a0 A Palaeographical and Textual Handbook<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Mildred O. Budny examined <strong>&#8220;Manuscripts as Artefacts&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">By approaching a manuscript as an artefact as well as a carrier of text and a work of art, we are able to record information which answers questions or provides supporting evidence for many lines of inquiry.\u00a0 They range from palaeography and art history to textual and linguistic studies.\u00a0 Notable examples include the discoveries of unknown glosses and the recovery of texts hitherto ony partially deciphered (as with Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, MSS 173B and 422B); and the identification within a manuscript of sequences of production and layers of accretion, through additions alterations and other forms (as with MSS 23 and 173A and B), sometimes making it possible to assign certain features to particular periods or places.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The account will survey results of the Research Group&#8217;s integrated approach to manuscript studies.\u00a0 They include collaborative monograph studies, essays on various themes, a new <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180901230721\/https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/profile\/publications\/insular-anglo-saxon-and-early-anglo-norman-manuscript-art-at-corpus-christi-college-cambridge-1997\/\" target=\"_blank\">catalogue of Anglo-Saxon and related manuscripts at Corpus<\/a>, the <em>Palaeographical and Textual Handbook<\/em>, full colour facsimiles of manuscripts (as with MSS 23, <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20100628222305\/http:\/\/parkerweb.stanford.edu\/parker\/actions\/manuscript_description_long_display.do?ms_no=139\" target=\"_blank\">MS 139<\/a> and 173).\u00a0 Special attention will be given to manuscript photography, including forms of image enhancement used to distinguish inks, pigments and layers of accretion.\u00a0 Examples will focus upon the preparation for the facsimile of MS 173.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8556\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Knotworks.-Kinkaku-ji-Kyoto-30-Nov-1993.-Photograph-\u00a9-Mildred-Budny.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8556\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8556 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Knotworks.-Kinkaku-ji-Kyoto-30-Nov-1993.-Photograph-\u00a9-Mildred-Budny-1024x713.png\" alt=\"'Knotworks', Kinkaku-ji, Kyoto, 30 Nov 1992. is listed <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/seminars-on-the-evidence.of-manuscripts\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>The Series of Photographic Exhibitions<\/h3>\n<p>More versions of the Travelling Photographic Exhibition visited the <a href=\"https:\/\/wmich.edu\/medievalcongress\" target=\"_blank\">International Congress on Medieval Studies<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/1993-international-congress-on-medieval-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\">1993<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/1994-international-congress-on-medieval-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\">1994<\/a>, at the invitation of the Director of the Medieval Institute, host of that Congress.\u00a0 Those years marked the first of the years that the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence participated as an entity at the Congress.\u00a0 The years-long &#8220;Prequel&#8221;
