Views of Manuscript Writing&#8221;<\/a><br \/>\n1 November 1993<\/p>\n<p>[<em>First published in 15 September 2016, as Mildred Budny reviews the event and its setting among the many events and activities of the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<h3>The Plan<\/h3>\n<p>Dated 12 November 1993, the 2-page Invitation Letter (shown here and downloadable <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/download\/8480\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> with the 1-page RSVP Form) provides the Menu for the Food for Thought.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We plan to hold a workshop on Saturday, 11 December, devoted to <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160430101710\/https:\/\/parkerweb.stanford.edu\/parker\/actions\/manuscript_description_long_display.do?ms_no=162\" target=\"_blank\">Corpus Christi College, MS 41<\/a>:\u00a0 the Corpus Old English Bede.\u00a0 This large-format eleventh-century manuscript principally contains a copy of the Old English version of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bede\" target=\"_blank\">Bede<\/a>&#8216;s <em>Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum<\/em>, with a large cycle of decorated initials, including historiated initials depicting secular and religious subjects.\u00a0 It also has numerous texts added in the margins and other available areas.\u00a0 In Latin and Old English, the additions include liturgical, homiletic, poetic and other texts:\u00a0 portions of a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sacramentary\" target=\"_blank\">sacramentary<\/a>, part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martyrology\" target=\"_blank\">martyrology<\/a>, metrical and prose charms, a recipe, prayers, the beginning of <em>Solomon and Saturn I<\/em>, six anonymous homilies, two runic inscriptions and the bilingual donorship inscription recording <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leofric_(bishop)\" target=\"_blank\">Bishop Leofric<\/a>&#8216;s gift of the book to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leofric_(bishop)\" target=\"_blank\">Exeter Cathedral<\/a>.\u00a0 There are many trials, sketches and drawings, including some supplied, retouched or retraced initials.\u00a0 The multiple additions endow the book with the remarkable character of a combined <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Commonplace_book\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;commonplace book&#8221;<\/a> and sketchbook, forming a richly layered artifact.<\/p>\n<p>Much goes on between the covers.\u00a0 Not all of it seemly.\u00a0 For example, this manuscript sees fit to include an image of a hanged man.\u00a0 Creepy.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>The Years&#8217; Long Focus of Research<\/h3>\n<p>As the Letter explains,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">MS 41 has been a focus of our research at the Parker Library over a number of years,\u00a0 It was closely examined for a new catalogue of Anglo-Saxon and related manuscripts at Corpus.\u00a0 As part of our ongoing exploration of the book, the workshop will discuss its nature, its problems and its context.\u00a0 We hope you might attend to give your advice and help.<\/p>\n<h3>The Speakers<\/h3>\n<p>As usual,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We aim to run the workshop on informal lines, as a round table.\u00a0 This will give plenty of opportunity to respond to the speakers and ask questions.<\/p>\n<p>The subjects and possible subjects:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Mildred Budny will survey the character of the manuscript and summarise our work on it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldcat.org\/wcidentities\/lccn-n79038650\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">Raymond Grant<\/a> will assess the manuscript and its problems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Ray Page will consider some of its linguistic features.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/staffprofiles.humanities.manchester.ac.uk\/Profile.aspx?Id=don.scragg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">Don Scragg<\/a> will examine the language of some of the marginal texts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trentu.ca\/english\/faculty-research\/sarah-larratt-keefer\" target=\"_blank\">Sarah Keefer<\/a> will examine the liturgical material and its context, both within the manuscript and among surviving sources.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dur.ac.uk\/history\/staff\/profiles\/?id=4318\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Gameson<\/a> will discussion the decoration and illustration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">There might be a report of Richard Johnson&#8217;s work in progress on the <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarworks.iu.edu\/journals\/index.php\/tmr\/article\/view\/16346\/22464\" target=\"_blank\">homily on St Michael<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/history.unm.edu\/people\/faculty\/profile\/timothy-graham.html\" target=\"_blank\">Tim Graham<\/a> will survey the signs of early modern use in the book.<\/p>\n<p>As usual, &#8220;we hope that others will contribute to the discussion from their areas of specialisation and interest&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h3>The Manuscript(s)<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">MS 41 will be available for examination during the workshop, along with other books in the collection.\u00a0 They will include manuscripts containing Old English translations of major Latin texts in large format, manuscripts containing texts similar to those added in the margins, manuscripts which Leofric gave to Exeter and manuscripts used as &#8220;commonplace books&#8221;
