Via Wikipedia Commons.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Often, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/1993-international-congress-on-medieval-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\">1993<\/a> Congress onward, the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence participates in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wmich.edu\/medieval\/congress\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>International Congress on Medieval Studies<\/strong><\/a> (ICMS) held annually at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo. The Research Group activities at the Congress take myriad forms.<\/p>\n<p>Usually, now, we sponsor and co-sponsor <strong>Sessions<\/strong> with <strong>Papers<\/strong>, <strong>Responses<\/strong>, or a <strong>Panel Discussion<\/strong>. Sometimes the <strong>Session<\/strong> includes a <strong>Display<\/strong> of original manuscript and related materials. Occasionally we have provided a <strong>Photographic Exhibition<\/strong> of manuscript images and commentary. Some years call for special celebrations, with a <strong>Party<\/strong> or <strong>Reception<\/strong>, as with our Special Anniversary Year of <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/2014-international-congress-on-medieval-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\">2014<\/a>. Our practice also includes <strong>Trustees&#8217; Meetings<\/strong> or <strong>Business Meetings<\/strong>, as appropriate; since <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/2015-international-congress-on-medieval-studies\" target=\"_blank\">2015<\/a>, our <strong>Open Business Meetings<\/strong> are listed in the Congress Schedule, with an assigned room and provided refreshments. The concise Agendas for these Meetings, which report on one page our activities, accomplishments, prospects, requirements, and vision, continue to be downloaded regularly from this website (so far for <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/download\/5641\/\" target=\"_blank\">2015<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/download\/7112\/\" target=\"_blank\">2016<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/category\/international-congress-on-medieval-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\">Congress Archive<\/a> reports our <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/congress-activities\" target=\"_blank\">Congress Activities<\/a> for each year. Among them are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/profile\/sponsored-sessions-at-the-international-congress-on-medieval-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Sponsored Sessions<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/profile\/co-sponsored-sessions-at-the-international-congress-on-medieval-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\">Co-Sponsored Sessions<\/a>, highlighting the different organizations in their own right.<\/p>\n<p>These concerted activities did not arise, unlike Athena, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Piraeus_Athena\" target=\"_blank\">fully formed<\/a>.\u00a0 They took years of preparations, both in the development of an integrated approach to manuscript studies, and in the cultivation of fields of expertise, experts, scholars, students, and others interested in the study and promotion of better understanding the transmission of written materials through the ages.\u00a0 Some of this spadework occurred at the International Congress on Medieval Studies.\u00a0 We review its highlights here.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>The &#8220;Prequel&#8221; in 1992 and Before<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mono_LOGO11.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1665 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mono_LOGO11-150x139.png\" alt=\"Logo of the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence in Monochrome Version\" width=\"150\" height=\"139\" srcset=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mono_LOGO11-150x139.png 150w, https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mono_LOGO11-300x278.png 300w, https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mono_LOGO11.png 869w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Earlier visits to the Annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wmich.edu\/medieval\/congress\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>International Congress on Medieval Studies<\/strong><\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/scholarworks.wmich.edu\/medieval_cong_archive\/27\/\" target=\"_blank\">1984<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"http:\/\/scholarworks.wmich.edu\/medieval_cong_archive\/24\/\" target=\"_blank\">1987<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/scholarworks.wmich.edu\/medieval_cong_archive\/22\/\" target=\"_blank\">1989<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"http:\/\/scholarworks.wmich.edu\/medieval_cong_archive\/19\/\" target=\"_blank\">1992<\/a>) prepared the way for the participation of the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence, once the organization had become established as an entity based at the <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20161203100608\/http:\/\/www.corpus.cam.ac.uk:80\/about-us\/parker-library\/\" target=\"_blank\">Parker Library<\/a> of Corpus Christi College in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of Cambridge<\/a>, and as an entity of its own. as reported in the Third Annual Report to the Leverhulme Trust (1991\u20131992) for the 5-year Research Project on &#8220;The Archaeology of Anglo-Saxon Manuscripts&#8221;. (See our <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/profile\/publications\/\" target=\"_blank\">Publications<\/a>.) By 1993, the first of those joint publications had appeared, in the form of <a href=\"https:\/\/mip-archumanitiespress.org\/products\/M-7797-5748-100-829-7\/\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Parker and His Books<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Already by 1990, through conversations and correspondence, plans were underway to produce a volume of plates from photographs of Anglo-Saxon illustrations in manuscripts at the Parker Library.<\/p>\n<p>And so, following the Congress timetable for proposals of sessions for the next Congress, in early Summer 1992 there was proposed and accepted the Session to be sponsored by the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence at the <a href=\"http:\/\/scholarworks.wmich.edu\/medieval_cong_archive\/19\/\" target=\"_blank\">27th International Congress on Medieval Studies<\/a>. Both it and the other activities of the Research Group at the <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/1993-international-congress-on-medieval-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\">1993 Congress<\/a> are reported in our post for that undertaking.\u00a0 Similarly, they are described in the Fourth Annual Report for the Leverhulme Trust Research Project (1992\u20131993).<\/p>\n<p>That Congress was the first (of many) in which the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence figured on the program and in the printed booklet of the Congress at Kalamazoo. Ohlgren<\/a>. Already, with contributions, updates, and corrections for numerous entries, she had joined both the collective preparations and the list of named collaborators for his research resource providing &#8220;pictorial or iconographic documentation&#8221; for the surviving corpus of <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.hathitrust.org\/Record\/000358705\" target=\"_blank\">Insular and Anglo-Saxon Illuminated Manuscripts: An Iconographic Catalogue c. A.D. 625 to 1100<\/a> (published in 1986).<\/p>\n<p>The wish to update and expand that reference tool led to computerized versions, edited by Thomas H. Ohlgren and Mildred Budny. They were issued first in 1991 as the <em>Corpus of Insular and Anglo-Saxon Illuminated Manuscripts: Inventory of Manuscripts<\/em> and then reissued in 1994 \u2014 using, with permission, the same title as the one which Mildred Budny had chosen by then for her <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180901230721\/https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/profile\/publications\/insular-anglo-saxon-and-early-anglo-norman-manuscript-art-at-corpus-christi-college-cambridge-1997\/\" target=\"_blank\">Illustrated Catalogue<\/a> (published in 1997) \u2014 <em>Corpus of Insular, Anglo-Saxon, and Early Anglo-Norman Manuscript Art: A Hypertext Version<\/em>. Sometimes the corresponding titles lead to a confusion or conflation between their publications. (See <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/profile\/publications\/mildred-budny-catalogue\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<h4>A Place for Pictures of Pictures<\/h4>\n<p>The desire for an illustrated version of the <em>Corpus<\/em> \u2014 not, perhaps, to be confused with the College named Corpus Christi in Cambridge upon the Cam \u2014 led Tom Ohlgren to explore its accomplishment, leading to the plan for publication by Medieval Institute Publications at Western Michigan University.\u00a0 And so, in 1992, there appeared his volume devoted to <a href=\"https:\/\/mip-archumanitiespress.org\/products\/A-65110-101120-96-8416-1\/\" target=\"_blank\">Anglo-Saxon Textual Illustration: Photographs of Sixteen Manuscripts with Descriptions and Index<\/a>.\u00a0 A worthy accomplishment!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8314\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/In-the-Courtyard-at-AZO-1992-Photograph-\u00a9-Mildred-Budny.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8314\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8314 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/In-the-Courtyard-at-AZO-1992-Photograph-\u00a9-Mildred-Budny-1024x719.jpg\" alt=\"At the 1992 Congress. Photograph \u00a9 Mildred Budny<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Another Place<\/h4>\n<p>But, for copyright reasons, that 1992 volume contained no photographs from manuscripts at Corpus Christi College.\u00a0 Tom had explained that copyright situation or obstacle in conversations at the 1990 Congress. Even before her arrival as the full-time Research Associate (a new, outside-funded position) at the Parker Library (1989), Mildred Budny had been granted permission to photograph materials there, starting with the colour photography for parts of the large-format facsimile of <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120403190440\/http:\/\/parkerweb.stanford.edu\/parker\/actions\/manuscript_description_long_display.do?ms_no=23\" target=\"_blank\">Corpus MS 144<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/1927031\/The_%C3%89pinal_Erfurt_Werden_and_Corpus_Glossaries\" target=\"_blank\">Corpus Glossary<\/a> in the company of 2 related early-medieval glossaries (published in 1988).\u00a0 Next followed the fulfillment (with her own photographic equipment) of some orders for photographs, both outside and internal, from materials at the Library.\u00a0 The results led, in turn, to the work as in-house photographer (among other functions) for the Leverhulme Trust Research Project at the Library.<\/p>\n<p>Tom&#8217;s introductions to the Director, Managing Editor, and others at the Medieval Institute and Medieval Institute Publications led to the plan to publish a volume of plates solely from Anglo-Saxon illustrated manuscripts at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.\u00a0 That plan underwent numerous transformations, as the explorations, research, and Research Project advanced.\u00a0 The contract was signed in September 1990; the transformations led to a larger publication, with many more plates, with an expanded definition of &#8220;Manuscript Art&#8221;, and with an accompanying catalogue.\u00a0 The scope and the results are described <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180901230721\/https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/profile\/publications\/insular-anglo-saxon-and-early-anglo-norman-manuscript-art-at-corpus-christi-college-cambridge-1997\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/profile\/orders\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As that plan began to take shape, so also came another book, also with photographs taken expressly for it by Mildred Budny from manuscripts, early printed books, and other materials at the Parker Library \u2014 some of them directly within the scope of the Research Project.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<h3>Co-Publications with Medieval Institute Publications<\/h3>\n<p>Two publications have appeared in association with <strong>Medieval Institute Publications<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>1. The Sandars Lectures in Bibliography for 1990 (published in 1993)<\/h4>\n<p>Because of the arrangement already with M.I.P. to publish the <strong>Illustrated Catalogue<\/strong> (see below), it was agreed also to co-publish the illustrated volume of <a href=\"https:\/\/mip-archumanitiespress.org\/products\/M-7797-5748-100-829-7\/\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Parker and His Books<\/a>.\u00a0 It came into print first.\u00a0 It publishes and illustrates the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/us\/academic\/subjects\/literature\/english-literature-general-interest\/series\/sandars-lectures-bibliography\" target=\"_blank\">Sandars Lectures in Bibliography<\/a> delivered in Cambridge in 1990 by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/R._I._Page\" target=\"_blank\">R.I. Page<\/a> \u2014 Parker Librarian and Director of the Research Project.\u00a0 The format and design of the volume was explicitly modelled upon the first ambitiously illustrated book produced by the New Issues Press of Western Michigan University:\u00a0 Georgian R. They stand among several such <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/events-list\/receptions-and-parties\/\" target=\"_blank\">Receptions &amp; Parties<\/a> across our history, including some which take place with co-sponsorship at the International Congress on Medieval Studies (2004\u2013).<\/p>\n<p>The course of co-sponsorship of Sessions and Receptions with several other organizations at the same Annual Congress (<a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/congress-activities\/\" target=\"_blank\">2006\u2013<\/a>) deserves its telling, but that story mainly belongs to the development of contacts, interests, opportunities, and collaboration which took shape, or clearer shape, after the Preparatory Years leading to the formation of the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence.
