The subjects of manuscripts (and other written records) in terms of their figural and figured approaches to the words as laid out on the writing surfaces, and as intended to be construed or parsed or puzzled out, have many directions. Some we have touched upon in the 2026 session on &#8220;Manuscripts at Play and as Play&#8221; at Leeds. Some we will continue to explore or broach afresh in our Workshop 11. Some may emerge for consideration, perhaps also for further exploration, at the Workshop.<\/p>\n<p>We welcome you to bring your interests, questions, and suggestions.<\/p>\n<h2>The Team<\/h2>\n<p>We gather speakers and respondents to present case-studies and invite discussion.<\/p>\n<h3>1.<strong> Mildred Budny <\/strong>(Executive Director, Research Group on Manuscript Evidence)<\/h3>\n<p>Milly will introduce the session and its speakers, moderate the Q&amp;A, and contribute her own reflections upon long-term work on manuscripts containing Figured Texts of many kinds.<\/p>\n<h3>2. <strong>Michael Allman Conrad <\/strong>(University of Konstanz)<\/h3>\n<p>Michael might be able to attend to reflect upon his close study of Hrabanus Maurus&#8217;s life and work, thereby developing his report for our 2026 Leeds session on the monumental illustrated manuscripts and printed editions<\/p>\n<h3>3. Mark Saltveit<\/h3>\n<h4>&#8220;The Palindrome Sylloge&#8221;<\/h4>\n<p>Mark will report on a forthcoming publication:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The most consequential discovery I&#8217;ve made is what we&#8217;re now calling &#8220;The Palindrome Sylloge,&#8221; a previously unknown collection of 14 Latin poems from late antiquity or perhaps the very early medieval period, found (illegibly) on the front flyleaf of BL Harley MS 2735 (c. 860 CE).\u00a0 A generous tip from David Ganz led me to it and I&#8217;ve had assistance from many top scholars in different fields in wrestling it to the ground.\u00a0 It has 2 church inscriptions from de Rossi&#8217;s ICUR II, 8\u00a0<i>versus recurrentes\u00a0<\/i>(5 unpublished), an unpublished ekphrastic distich about two miracles of the Apostle Peter, two\u00a0<i>carmen minora\u00a0<\/i>of Claudian, and Ps-Seneca&#8217;s\u00a0<i>De qualitate temporis.\u00a0\u00a0<\/i>Our\u00a0<i>editio princeps\u00a0<\/i>is in revision at Scriptorium.<\/p>\n<h3>4. <strong>Antony R. Henk <\/strong>(Ruhr-Universit\u00e4t Bochum)<\/h3>\n<h4>&#8220;Playing with Sacred Space:<br \/>\nMapping and Re-Mapping the Holy Land<br \/>\nin Manuscripts of Adomn\u00e1n\u2019s and Bede\u2019s <em>De locis sanctis&#8221;<\/em><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">In my response paper for the 2026 Leeds session <a href=\"manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/2026-international-medieval-congress-at-leeds\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Manuscripts at Play and as Play: Temporalities and (Re)Configurations as Reading Methods\u2019<\/a>, I discussed how the diagrams which accompany many manuscript recensions of Adomn\u00e1n\u2019s <em>De locis sanctis<\/em> can be understood as tools which facilitate Jean Leclerq\u2019s concept (1961) of the <em>peregrinatio in stabilitate<\/em>. I suggested that these diagrams of holy sites are analogous to the \u2018battle maps\u2019 or \u2018dungeon maps\u2019 used in tabletop role-playing games, in that they allow the audience to more concretely visualise physical space than is possible via narrative description alone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">In my revisit to this topic and framework, I wish to examine how various copies of Adomn\u00e1n\u2019s work, and copies of Bede\u2019s epitome of it, engage in \u2018playing\u2019 with these maps and the locations they aim to depict.
