For the 2009 Congress, the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence<\/strong> sponsored one Session.<\/p>\n It also co-sponsored<\/p>\n In keeping with the Group\u2019s mission to \u201capply an integrated, holistic approach to manuscripts and texts in other forms\u201d, our Session gathered papers closely examining the materials in the margins of manuscripts, especially those that not only comment upon the texts which they surround, but which may offer alternative or even \u201ccorrective\u201d readings to a manuscript\u2019s central text.\u00a0\u00a0That is, while some marginal images exist to support a text (by providing mnemonic aid, or by illustrating a scene in a \u201ccentral\u201d story), others seem to exist at a disjoint to their neighboring text (as with the rude grylles and shitten monkeys that pepper so many holy works) and so may offer counterpoint or even contradiction to an otherwise uncontested central text.\u00a0\u00a0Our papers considered such potentially \u201cself-correcting\u201d marginalia in medieval manuscripts:\u00a0\u00a0the images that, while often subordinate to the text, still find a rebelliously self-reflexive voice.<\/p>\n Organizer: Jeff Massey<\/strong> (Molloy College)<\/p>\n Presider: Mildred Budny<\/strong> (Research Group on Manuscript Evidence)<\/p>\n Presenters:<\/p>\n Sarah Celentano Parker<\/strong> (University of Texas \u2013 Austin) Respondent:<\/p>\n Philosophy and the Seven Liberal Arts, as depicted in the “Hortus Deliciarum”.
