Northern Italy (Siena), 15th century.<\/p><\/div>\n A Note on the Image<\/em>:\u00a0 Within the historiated initial<\/a> P<\/em> of Per<\/em> opening Canto 1<\/em> of Purgatorio<\/em> in the Divine Comedy<\/em> by Dante Alighieri (circa<\/abbr>\u20091265 \u2013 1321), a ship under sail carries the poets Dante and his guide Publius Vergilius Maro (70 \u2013 19 BC).<\/p>\n The manuscript (London, British Library, Yates Thompson MS 36, is one of the most beautiful and largely illustrated of the many surviving medieval manuscripts of this important text.
