Photograph \u24b8 Mildred Budny.<\/p><\/div>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">2023 Spring Symposium<br \/>\n&#8220;From the Ground Up&#8221;<\/h1>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Part 1 of 2 in the<br \/>\n2023 Spring and Autumn Symposia<br \/>\non &#8220;Materials &amp; Access&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>[<em>Posted on 12 January 2023  , with updates<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>With its chosen Theme of &#8220;Materials &amp; Access&#8221; for the Year 2023, the Research Group prepares a pair of Symposia, continuing its expanded pattern of paired day-long virtual <strong>Spring and Autumn Symposia<\/strong> launched in <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/2022-spring-and-autumn-symposia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 Until then, <strong>RGME Symposia<\/strong> had occurred on occasion at one per year, sometimes annually and sometimes at intervals.\u00a0 Whereas previously they occurred in person, at various centers (like the <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/2020-spring-symposium-save-the-date\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020 Spring Symposium<\/a>, which had to be cancelled on account of lockdown for Covid), the Symposia in 2022 and 2023 take place online by Zoom.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the Spring and Autumn Symposia will take place by Zoom on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Saturday, 25 March 2023<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Saturday 21 October 2023<\/strong> (&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sweetest_Day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Sweetest Day<\/a>&#8221; 2023)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>And There&#8217;s More<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a further expansion, the 2023 Spring Symposium will be preceded by a half-day <strong>Pre-Symposium<\/strong> which presents a series of <strong>Lightning Talks<\/strong>.\u00a0 They will emerge from the Call for Proposals, issued on 10 January 2023, with a deadline of 12 February 2023.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/call-for-papers-intrepid-borders-lightning-talks-24-march-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 Pre-Symposium Call for Papers: &#8220;Intrepid Borders&#8221; Lightning Talks<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Following that deadline, the Program of Talks for the Pre-Symposium has been selected and is now announced.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/2023-pre-symposium-on-intrepid-borders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 &#8216;Pre-Symposium&#8217; on &#8220;Intrepid Borders&#8221;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The New Ensemble:\u00a0 Pre-Symposium and Symposium<\/h2>\n<p>This year, with\u00a0the\u00a0Theme of\u00a0\u201cMaterials and Access\u201d, we not only prepare a pair of Symposia, but\u00a0also extend the Spring Symposium with an accompanying \u2018Pre-Symposium\u2019 of\u00a0Lightning Talks on\u00a0the afternoon before. Selected through a Call for Proposals, these Talks explore the challenges of\u00a0\u201cIntrepid Borders: Marginalia in Medieval and Early Modern Books\u201d. The\u00a0plan for such sessions, their subject, the Call for Proposals, and the selected Program for the Lightning Talks are due to\u00a0the initiative, enthusiasm, and organizational expertise of Jessica L. Savage and her co-organizers Katharine C. Chandler and Jenifer Larson. The fresh combination of exploratory Lightning Talks on\u00a0Friday and the invited Symposium Presentations on Saturday opens our Symposia more widely.<\/p>\n<p>The extended Symposium presents new and cumulative work, with reports of discoveries, work-in-progress, and collaborative projects. Some build upon work presented for the Symposia in 2022 (<a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/2022-spring-symposium-on-structures-of-knowledge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022 Spring Symposium on &#8220;Structures of Knowledge&#8221;<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/2022-autumn-symposium-on-supports-for-knowledge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022 Autumn Symposium on &#8220;Supports for Knowledge&#8221;<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>We consider evidence from the medieval to modern periods and across a wide geographical, historical, and cultural range, both Western (Europe and North America) and non-Western (Ethiopia, Yemen, and Western India).
