Currer Bell]<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The RGME Episode with Barbara Heritage showcases a study of the author at work, based upon material evidence in the structure of the manuscript itself intended for the printing.<\/p>\n<h3>Title and Abstract<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Stages of Composition:<br \/>\nCharlotte Bront\u00eb\u2019s Fair-Copy Manuscript for <em>Shirley<\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0Barbara Heritage<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><em>Barbara&#8217;s Abstract for her presentation:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">On 8 September 1849, James Taylor traveled from London to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haworth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Haworth<\/a>, Yorkshire, to collect the manuscript of Charlotte Bront\u00eb\u2019s novel, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shirley_(novel)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shirley<\/a>, for publication.\u00a0 His firm, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Smith,_Elder_%26_Co.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smith, Elder and Co.<\/a>, had been anxiously awaiting the completion of the book for nearly a year.\u00a0 Readers both in England and abroad were eager to read the next work by &#8220;Currer Bell&#8221;, whose first published novel, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jane_Eyre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jane Eyre<\/a> (1847), had proved surprisingly popular.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The manuscript, which now resides in the British Library (Add MS 43479), includes numerous excisions to its 896 leaves.\u00a0 Its three volumes have been characterized by some as a confused \u201ctext of grief\u201d written during the loss of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bront%C3%AB_family\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bront\u00eb\u2019s siblings<\/a> \u2014 and by another as proof of self-censorship and even \u201csymptoms of a writing disorder or disease.\u201d\u00a0 A close codicological study of the manuscript offers an alternative reading by drawing on the correlation of paper stocks and varying pagination, providing new material-based evidence for how Bront\u00eb strategically and deliberately revised \u2014 and even expanded \u2014 her manuscript after serving as the primary caregiver for her siblings.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17362\" style=\"width: 611px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17362\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-17362 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Shirley_a_tale_-_Page_n8-601x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Shirley_a_tale_-_Page_n8-601x1024.jpg 601w, https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Shirley_a_tale_-_Page_n8-176x300.jpg 176w, https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Shirley_a_tale_-_Page_n8-88x150.jpg 88w, https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Shirley_a_tale_-_Page_n8.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17362\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The First page of the First Edition of &#8216;Shirley&#8217; by Charlotte Bront\u00eb (1849).
