Smeltzer (<a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/download\/11463\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ronald K. Smeltzer, Ph.D.<\/a>) examines a telling case of multiple editions, issued with variations in printing methods, of an eighteenth-century treatise in French on methods of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Surveying\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surveying<\/a>.\u00a0 The technique of surveying has a long and venerable tradition, with a varied series of books on the subject from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Corpus_Agrimensorum_Romanorum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">late-antiquity<\/a> onward.<\/p>\n<h3>The Plan<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\n<p>Direct, detailed examination of the editions, all in octavo format, of <em>La science de l&#8217;arpenteur<\/em> by Louis Charles Dupain de Montesson reveals multiple changes and adaptations that illuminate its extraordinary printing history.\u00a0 Early editions were printed all engraved including signatures of the leaves.\u00a0 Some of the later changes to the text and to the book design were a direct result of the French Revolution.\u00a0 Assembling examples of all the known editions has taken twenty years.\u00a0 The process attests to the value of direct inspection.\u00a0 This presentation describes the results.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Ronald K. Smeltzer, Ph.D.<\/h3>\n<p>In his own words, the speaker<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">had a technical career, now long past, in the electronics (semiconductor) industry.\u00a0 His continuing bibliographical research projects focus on the history of publishing and on methods of illustration in the sciences.\u00a0 He has presented and published papers on a variety of bibliographical subjects and in the history of science.<\/p>\n<p>His research has resulted in two exhibitions and their printed publications for <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/the-curious-printing-history-of-la-science-de-larpenteur\/\" target=\"&quot;_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Grolier Club<\/a>.\u00a0 The more recent focused on the contributions of women in the sciences.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oakknoll.com\/pages\/books\/119013\/ronald-k-smeltzer-robert-j-ruben-paulette-rose\/extraordinary-women-in-science-medicine-four-centuries-of-achievement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Extraordinary Women in Science &amp; Medicine:\u00a0 Four Centuries of Achievement, with Robert J. Ruben and Paulette Rose (New York:\u00a0 The Grolier Club, 2013).<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An earlier project resulted in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Four Centuries of Graphic Design for Science from the Collection of Ronald K. Smeltzer<\/em> (New York, The Grolier Club, 2003).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now in press (for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.springer.com\/gp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Springer<\/a>, 2022) is an article describing the variant texts \u2014 mostly unknown to scholars \u2014 and imprints of the book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maa.org\/press\/periodicals\/convergence\/mathematical-treasure-milie-du-ch-telet-s-institutions-de-physique\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Institutions De Physique<\/a> (first edition 1740) by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%89milie_du_Ch%C3%A2telet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00c9milie du Ch\u00e2telet<\/a>\u00a0 (1706-1749).<\/p>\n<p>Selected publications (excluding professional scientific) are listed in <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/download\/11463\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ronald K. Smeltzer, Ph.D.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>The Text and its Transmission<\/h3>\n<div>One of <a href=\"https:\/\/data.bnf.fr\/fr\/12462046\/dupain_de_montesson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">several texts<\/a> composed by the French military engineer <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_Charles_Dupain_de_Montesson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Louis Charles Dupain de Montesson<\/a> (circa 1720 \u2013 circa 1790), <i>La science de l&#8217;arpenteur dans toute son \u00e9tendu\u00eb<\/i> (&#8220;The science of the surveyer in its full extent&#8221;) was issued in a series of editions between 1766 and 1813.\u00a0 Some digital facsimiles represent them online (as with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/books\/edition\/La_science_de_l_arpenteur_dans_toute_son\/fgcOAAAAQAAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=S.+Taillot+Geographe+ordinaire+du+Roi&amp;pg=PP9&amp;printsec=frontcover\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paris: S.
