The Plan<\/strong><\/h4>\n

In 2019 the Research Group on Manuscript [and Other] Evidence celebrates 20 years as a nonprofit educational corporation based in Princeton, and 30 years as an international scholarly society founded at the Parker Library of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge<\/a>.\u00a0 Across the years, we have engaged in multiple events<\/a> in many places, over multiple manuscripts and other original sources, and on a broad range of subjects.\u00a0 We celebrate our friends, colleagues, hosts, donors, volunteers, and subjects of study.<\/p>\n

As part of these celebrations, we announce our Anniversary Symposium at Princeton University, host of many of our events over the years.\u00a0 This event takes place on Friday afternoon 26 April and Saturday 27 April 2019.<\/p>\n

The Events<\/h3>\n

On Friday afternoon the 26th, there will be a set of classes and a session, also followed by a Reception nearby.\u00a0 One class is given by Eric White, Curator of Rare Books, in Special Collections at Firestone Library<\/a>, revealing “New Findings in Old Bindings”.\u00a0\u00a0 Eric has agreed to repeat his class in 2 sittings, so as to allow more participants to attend, given the limit of 20 people for each class.\u00a0 Another class, limited to 15 people, will take place over a selection of medieval and early modern manuscript fragments in the Princeton University Art Museum<\/a>.\u00a0 To register for either class and the other events, please see below (Registration<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

On Saturday the 27th, a day’s sessions of papers and panels occur in 106 McCormick Hall<\/a>, accompanied by breaks for coffee and lunch, and followed by a Reception at the Index of Medieval Art<\/a>\u00a0(also in McCormick Hall).\u00a0 This Reception will include displays of manuscript and early printed materials brought by participants from their own collections.\u00a0 Some of our earlier events have showcased such materials, for example in a Research Group seminar held in the same room at the Index:\u00a0 Manuscripts and Their Photographs<\/a> .<\/p>\n

The Theme<\/h3>\n

Our 2019 Anniversary Symposium takes inspiration from its session organized by Barbara A. Shailor, showcasing case-studies at Yale University, on \u201cThe Peregrinations of Manuscripts:\u00a0 Origin, Provenance, or Both\u201d.\u00a0 Our program and curated displays demonstrate myriad challenges and opportunities for assessing the origins, travels, and arrivals of manuscripts, documents, and rare books. The focus centers upon selected medieval and early modern materials, both Western and non-Western. We include reports of discoveries, work-in-progress, cumulative research, and collaborative projects.<\/p>\n

Attention to the essence of \u201cLocation, Location, Location\u201d\u00a0\u2014 involving stages in the history, present homes, and resource potential of the materials \u2014 may also consider choices made by scholars, teachers, curators, collectors, and bibliophiles in shaping their paths towards chosen fields of concentration, methods of approach, and regional and international collaborations.<\/p>\n

Considering \u201cThe Roads Taken\u201d (obstacles included) by original materials in their patterns of production, use, collection, scholarship, and recognition, our event is designed to examine the nature of the evidence for locating the origins, travels, and homes of textual materials in diverse forms.<\/p>\n

Friday 26 April:\u00a0 Classes, a Demonstration, and a Reception<\/h3>\n

On Friday 26 April, classes are offered as part of the Symposium.\u00a0 Attendance is limited, and requires registration (see below) for whichever you might prefer.<\/p>\n

1) “New Findings in Old Bindings”
\n<\/strong>Class given by Eric White, Curator of Rare Books, in the Large Classroom of Floor C (Special Collections) at Firestone Library.\u00a0\u00a0 Limited to 20 participants, the class will be offered at 2 times.<\/p>\n

Reception<\/h4>\n

A Reception will follow, from 5:00\u20137:00 pm at Proctor House<\/a>, 53 University Place, Princeton.<\/p>\n

Saturday 27 April:\u00a0 Sessions of Papers, Reception, and Curated Display<\/h3>\n

On Saturday 27 April, the Sessions<\/strong> of papers and discussions will take place from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm<\/strong> in Room 106, McCormick Hall, with coffee breaks and a break for lunch.\u00a0 Lunch is provided, but we ask for a nominal contribution to defray its expenses.<\/p>\n

The Symposium closes with a Reception<\/strong> hosted by the Index of Medieval Art from 5:00 to 7:00 pm<\/strong>.\u00a0 In its Seminar Room, there will be a Display<\/strong> of original manuscript and early-printed materials brought by participants from their individual or institutional collections.<\/p>\n

We ask you to register for the event, preferably ahead of time.\u00a0 Also, because space is limited in Special Collections and the University Art Museum for the classes on Friday, we ask you to sign up for them.\u00a0 It helps our preparations for refreshments (Reception, Coffee Breaks, and the like) to know how many of you wish to attend.\u00a0 We would ask for a nominal contribution of $12 for lunch on Saturday, so as to defray those expenses.<\/p>\n
