Private Collection, reproduced by permission.\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/568-1437-Document-Docketing-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/568-1437-Document-Docketing-150x107.jpg 150w, https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/568-1437-Document-Docketing-1024x732.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Placed on one side of the sheet, the original text comprises two documents, one after the other, or rather two copies of a single document, regarding the same sale, dated <span class=\"il\">1437 and supplied with the same notarial signature.\u00a0 The other side of the sheet carries a set of inscriptions which provide information concerning the contents of the former register, rather than docketing information for the document itself.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Such docketing inscriptions appear, for example, on some other subjects of our blog, as with some other documents not pressed into service as reused covers: <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/italian-notarial-roll-of-1305-from-cesena\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/italian-notarial-roll-of-1305-from-cesena\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>. These differ from the titles or identifying inscriptions for the volumes which the reused sheets formerly covered. Such cases appear, for example, on large vellum sheets, from documents or manuscripts, pressed into service as covers, as <a href=\"http:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/a-leaf-from-gregorys-dialogues-reused-to-bind-euthymius\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The document now resides in a Private Collection, obtained through an online transaction.\u00a0 We thank the owner for bringing this item to our attention and supplying information as well as images.<\/p>\n<h3>Size Matters<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia;\">The size of the object required a piece-meal set of scans for its reproduction.\u00a0 Preparing the image shown here, the owner reports that, given the size of the available scanner, <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia;\">I had to fit four scans together, and it [that is, the image] isn&#8217;t quite complete, although it is missing at most three or four letters from [the end of] each line.\u00a0 One of the parties is a certain <em>Johannem Sabaterii curritorem animalium civem Barchine<\/em> who sells the property to one <em>Berengario Doluge curritorem animalium civem Barchine<\/em>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And so, with that resourceful tesselation, the face of the document appears here more-or-less in full:<a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/1437-upright.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11211 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/1437-upright-1024x625.jpg\" alt=\"Large Single-Sheet Latin Document on Vellum recording a sale of land of 1437. NASA, public domain.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Docketing for the Former Contents:\u00a0 <em>Cabreo de Castelloni<\/em> for 1488<\/h3>\n<p>On the verso (or dorse) of the document there stands a set of inscriptions written in two stages in two different inks and by two or more different hands identifying the contents.\u00a0 In three lines, the inscriptions state:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A\u00f1[n]o 14.88.<br \/>\nCabreo de Castello[n]i.<br \/>\n32 . . . . 3 . . . . 2<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8220;Year 1488.<br \/>\n<em>Cabreo<\/em> of the Castle<br \/>\n32 . . . . 3 . . . . 2&#8243;<\/p>\n<p>The first two lines state their case in a tall, imposing script written in dark brown ink.\u00a0 The third line rests its case in a series of numerals and dots written in mostly darker ink with a thinner pen (or pens) and partly retraced and add components, perhaps entered by two different hands or one hand on a revisit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/568-1437-Document-Docketing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11294 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/568-1437-Document-Docketing-1024x732.jpg\" alt=\"568 1437 Document Docketing\" width=\"1024\" height=\"732\" srcset=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/568-1437-Document-Docketing-1024x732.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/568-1437-Document-Docketing-150x107.jpg 150w, https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/568-1437-Document-Docketing-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/568-1437-Document-Docketing-222x160.jpg 222w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The language is Castellan, as signalled by the word <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linguee.com\/english-spanish\/translation\/cabreo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cabreo<\/a>: &#8220;In Catalonia and probably also in other areas of Spain, documents called <em>Capbreus<\/em> (in Castilian Spanish: <em>Cabreo<\/em>) are known from the Middle Ages.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The inscription indicates that the vellum document served for a time as the cover, or part of the cover, of the cartulary of the castle, presumably <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Montju%C3%AFc_Castle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Montju\u00efc Castle<\/a>.\u00a0 The building still stands, although its former moat has been overplanted. professional script and distinctive notary sign imply extensive practice at the skill.<\/p>\n<p><a
