Set in RGME Bembino.

1) For the Roundtable at our Colloquium, some unplanned internet issues affected reception in the live-streaming for part of the proceedings. We are grateful to online attendees who reported issues for gaining or regaining access, with helpful information behind-the-scenes for understanding aspects of the reception as it came across for the large online audience. Afterward we heard from online attendees ranging from as far afield as Washington State, Washington, D.C., Delaware, Ohio, Illinois, New Jersey, Canada, Spain, and Switzerland.

We are grateful to The Grolier Club and its staff for expert projection, live-streaming, and recording for the event. Despite a gap in the live-streaming, we gladly learned that the recording of the event in full has been preserved, and it is available for viewing through the Grolier Club YouTube account. One participant’s offer to correct automatic transcription errors for the captions is both generous and welcome. We look forward to such an improvement if it might become ready.

2) For the Workshop, with hybrid functionality provided by the RGME, as agreed, an unexpected issue — which emerged only as we were ‘saddling up’ to begin the workshop, unfortunately too late for remedy — marred the second part of the hybrid access.

New York, Grolier Club Library, GCPC-000268. Photograph by Beppy Landrum Owen.

For the first part, having the guided demonstration of materials, speakers in turn addressed the original materials viewed by document camera or — for the larger, outsize printed plates — held up on their own. These views were projected, as planned, on the large screen at one end of the room and to the online audience by our interactive RGME Zoom Meeting. Our online audience represented a comparably wide geographical range to that for the Roundtable, yet no so large and with an intimate scale which allowed for comments in the Zoom CHAT to communicate with the onsite Zoom manager and to the room. This process has become standard for RGME hybrid meetings, to much acclaim.

For the second part, as planned, the original materials were laid on cradles for closer examination, as attendees could stand before or alongside them, ask questions, compare notes, and turn the pages, then move from display to display so as to examine all the items in company. This experience, too, conforms with RGME provisions for an interactive hybrid opportunity, as manifested expertly and excellently for the RGME Workshops at Special Collections in Princeton only three months before, with the very same Production Team in person and online.

However, this time, although the equipment, trained skills, and personnel were gathered as agreed, the opportunity was missed in the second part to allow the online audience to interact with the demonstration and conversation about materials on the cradles. We apologize for this unexpected gap, despite our careful plans and promises for this event, particularly taking into account and building from the lessons which our Team has gained through experience and feedback in our previous hybrid visits to private and institutional collections since November 2024.

2026 RGME-Grolier Colloquium Poster 2. Set in RGME Bembino.

When the time came at the Workshop for the last steps to complete the setup for the equipment to provide close-ups and views of speakers (such as with the RGME desktop tripods and monopods for cell-phone camerawork, as at Princeton), the teamwork had to abort. With no notice to allow for alternate arrangements or responsible backup, this component was not covered onsite, as had been planned and announced, by our Intern / Production Co-Ordinator Assistant.

Afterward, it was explained to us that the resistance at the last minute of Set-Up came from the previously unarticulated (new?) ‘belief’ that the RGME must choose between doing either an in-person event or an online event, not both. Regarding that sudden departure from our official policy and practice at the event itself, despite preparations, the simple ‘explanation’ 0ffered afterward was that “We must agree to disagree.”

We apologize for disappointment and frustration for our audience and the overall accomplishment of this hybrid Workshop. Hence the transmission (and its recording) fall short of allowing for the online audience to join the experience of encountering the materials in the company of experts, students, and others interested in learning about the evidence of written materials and their contexts. We do know better, and have appropriate techniques. We seek to improve, and prepare to rebuild the RGME Production Team, which contains dedicated members nonetheless. We are grateful for your kind understanding and your continued belief in our mission.

Hybridities & Curiosities [Posted on 25 February 2026] A footnote about logistics and their preparations for the 2026 RGME Colloquium in February.
