{"id":1408,"date":"2014-07-23T16:45:40","date_gmt":"2014-07-23T16:45:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/?page_id=1408"},"modified":"2020-11-23T05:56:19","modified_gmt":"2020-11-23T05:56:19","slug":"congress-activities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/congress-activities\/","title":{"rendered":"Congress Activities"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">At the Annual<br \/>\nInternational Congress on Medieval Studies<\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">1993\u20121995, 1997, and 2004\u2012<\/h3>\n<p>[<em>First published on our first website on 7 July 2006, with updates there and here<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>Often the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence participates in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wmich.edu\/medieval\/congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>International Congress on Medieval Studies<\/strong><\/a> (ICMS) held annually at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo.\u00a0 Usually we sponsor and co-sponsor <strong>Sessions<\/strong> with <strong>Papers<\/strong>, <strong>Responses<\/strong>, or a <strong>Panel Discussion<\/strong>.\u00a0 Sometimes the <strong>Session<\/strong> includes a <strong>Display<\/strong> of original manuscript and related materials.\u00a0 Occasionally we have provided a <strong>Photographic Exhibition<\/strong> of manuscript images and commentary.\u00a0 Some years call for special celebrations, with a <strong>Party<\/strong> or <strong>Reception<\/strong>.\u00a0 Our practice also includes <strong>Trustees&#8217; Meetings<\/strong> or <strong>Business Meetings<\/strong>, as appropriate; since 2015, our <strong>Open Business Meetings<\/strong> are listed in the Congress Schedule, with an assigned room and provided refreshments.<\/p>\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/category\/international-congress-on-medieval-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Congress Archive<\/a> reports our <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/congress-activities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Congress Activities<\/a> for each year.\u00a0 Among them are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/profile\/sponsored-sessions-at-the-international-congress-on-medieval-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Sponsored Sessions<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/profile\/co-sponsored-sessions-at-the-international-congress-on-medieval-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Co-Sponsored Sessions<\/a>, highlighting the different organizations in their own right.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>The &#8220;Prequel&#8221; in 1992 and Before<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mono_LOGO11.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1665 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mono_LOGO11-150x139.png\" alt=\"Logo of the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence in Monochrome Version\" width=\"150\" height=\"139\" srcset=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mono_LOGO11-150x139.png 150w, https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mono_LOGO11-300x278.png 300w, https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mono_LOGO11.png 869w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Earlier visits to the Annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wmich.edu\/medieval\/congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>International Congress on Medieval Studies<\/strong><\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/scholarworks.wmich.edu\/medieval_cong_archive\/27\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1984<\/a>\u20131987 and 1989\u2013<a href=\"http:\/\/scholarworks.wmich.edu\/medieval_cong_archive\/19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1992<\/a>) prepared the way for the participation there of the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence, once the organization had become established as an entity based at the Parker Library of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Corpus_Christi_College,_Cambridge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Corpus Christi College<\/a> in the University of Cambridge, and as an entity of its own.\u00a0 These visits were undertaken by Mildred Budny, who regularly (apart from one year&#8217;s absence in <a href=\"http:\/\/scholarworks.wmich.edu\/medieval_cong_archive\/23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1988<\/a>, despite the plan to attend and to present a paper) presented papers on various subjects, once the Congress began to feature sessions focused on Anglo-Saxon Studies \u2014 successively while she was based at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_College_London\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University College London<\/a>, next at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Downing_College,_Cambridge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Downing College, Cambridge<\/a>, and then (from 1989) at the Parker Library.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;The Illustrated Royal Bible from St. Augustine&#8217;s Abbey&#8221; and<br \/>\n&#8220;Additions and Corrections to the Index to Iconographic Contents&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/scholarworks.wmich.edu\/medieval_cong_archive\/27\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1984<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;The Image of the Ascension in Anglo-Saxon Art&#8221; The rules changed later.<\/p>\n<p>The Abstracts for most of those papers were published in the annual Spring issues of the Old English Newsletter, now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oenewsletter.org\/OEN\/archives.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By the <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/1992-international-congress-on-medieval-studies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1992 Congress<\/a>, those visits to the Congress included consultations with the Director and Staff of the <a href=\"https:\/\/wmich.edu\/medieval\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medieval Institute<\/a> at Western Michigan University, host of the conference, &#8220;regarding joint publications and related matters,&#8221; as reported in the Third Annual Report to the Leverhulme Trust (1991\u20131992) for the 5-year Research Project on &#8220;The Archaeology of Anglo-Saxon Manuscripts&#8221;. (See our <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/profile\/publications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Publications<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>By 1993, the first of those joint publications had appeared, in the form of <a href=\"https:\/\/mip-archumanitiespress.org\/products\/M-7797-5748-100-829-7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew Parker and His Books<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It took until the 1997 Congress for the next joint publication to appear, in the form of the 2-volume <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manuscriptevidence.org\/profile\/publications\/the-illustrated-catalogue-1997\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Illustrated Catalogue<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n<h2>I. Sessions Sponsored &amp; Co-Sponsored<\/h2>\n<p>In 1993\u20121995 and annually since 2003, the <strong>Research Group on Manuscript Evidence<\/strong> sponsors <strong>Sessions<\/strong> at the Congress.<\/p>\n<p>In the next few years after the 1995 Congress, in the move of its principal base to the United States, the Research Group concentrated its energies on other work, notably:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/MB-Catalogue-Cover-II-logo-cropped.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6529 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/MB-Catalogue-Cover-II-logo-cropped.png\" alt=\"Gold stamp on blue cloth of the logo of the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence. Our custom is to publish the Abstracts of Papers presented (or intended) for our Sessions.\u00a0 Indexes list these Abstracts both<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/abstracts\/abstracts-of-conference-papers-listed-by-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">By Year<\/a> and<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/abstracts\/abstracts-of-conference-papers-listed-by-author\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">By Author<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Starting in 2006, our first website (no longer online) announced the stages for the preparations and accomplishment of each Congress on a single Page, with updates as the work progressed. Thus that Page reflected only the current, or most recent, stage, while the earlier stages &#8216;disappeared&#8217; behind the scenes.<\/p>\n<p>Then, the transition to our second, updated website \u2014 a transition begun in 2014 and completed in 2015 (You Are Here) \u2014 made it possible to issue the announcements for a given Congress in a series of blogposts, rather than overwriting its statements, which had left only the final state in view. Business Meetings<\/h2>\n<p>In some years, the Research Group holds a Business Meeting and\/or a Board of Trustees&#8217; Meeting at the Congress.<\/p>\n<p>At the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/2015-international-congress-on-medieval-studies-events-announced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>2015 Congress<\/strong><\/a>, for the first time, the Business Meeting was listed in the Congress Schedule (formerly online as &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">www.wmich.edu\/medieval\/files\/schedule-2015.pdf<\/span>&#8220;), now archived as <a href=\"http:\/\/scholarworks.wmich.edu\/medieval_cong_archive\/50\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">50th International Congress on Medieval Studies<\/a>), with an assigned room and time, open to all, including newcomers.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/2015-international-congress-on-medieval-studies-events-accomplished\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2015 Congress Report<\/a> describes the Meeting and provides the <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/download\/5641\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agenda<\/a>, which takes the form of a concise report of the the Group&#8217;s activities, aims, and desiderata.<\/p>\n<p>A similar Open Business Meeting took place at the <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/2016-international-congress-on-medieval-studies-program\/\" target=\"\">2016 Congress<\/a>.
