Bernhardt\u2013House<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/2019-international-congress-on-medieval-studies-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019 Congress Program<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>[<em>Published on 15 March 2019<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<h4>Abstract<\/h4>\n<p>The 9<sup>th<\/sup> century text <em>Heliand, <\/em>a paraphrase of the Gospel written in Old Saxon commissioned by Louis the Pious, continued the work of Louis\u2019s father Charlemagne, in cementing the conversion of the Saxons from their indigenous religion to Christianity.\u00a0 This work was a complex refashioning of the life of Christ that utilized elements of pre-Christian Germanic religious and cultural motifs better to communicate its Christian message to Saxon Heathens.\u00a0 As such, it included symbolism, on the surface, better suited to iconography of the Germanic Gods than the Christian one.
