{"id":10,"date":"2013-04-11T17:56:40","date_gmt":"2013-04-11T17:56:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/?page_id=10"},"modified":"2025-02-13T04:11:00","modified_gmt":"2025-02-13T04:11:00","slug":"mission","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/","title":{"rendered":"Mission"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">Principles and Practices<\/h1>\n<p>The Research Group on Manuscript Evidence exists to apply an interlinked, comprehensive approach to manuscripts and texts in other forms through the ages.\u00a0\u00a0Our work began on medieval Western European manuscripts and early modern printed books in specific collections, but, over the years, our research work and our mission have expanded to embrace a wider body of written (and other) sources, from the Antique world to the present.<\/p>\n<h2>Manuscripts and Other Evidence<\/h2>\n<p>The Research Group considers these and many related materials simultaneously as carriers of text, archaeological artefacts, works of art, layers of history, and monuments of culture.\u00a0\u00a0The Group seeks to examine, record, and analyze the evidence of these witnesses of history, life, thought, art, and culture, and to set their testimony in context.\u00a0\u00a0It also works to educate others in its methods and its results.\u00a0\u00a0It offers a concerted, informed response to the complex challenges of preserving, transmitting, and understanding the legacy of the past.\u00a0\u00a0By such means we seek better to understand the present and to help prepare for the future, above all a future worth having.<\/p>\n<p>We welcome scholars, both established and developing, as well as independent scholars, experts, students, and amateurs in many areas of interest in the academic and wider worlds.\u00a0\u00a0This company is manifested in our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/profile\/officers-associates-and-volunteers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Officers, Associates &amp; Volunteers<\/strong><\/a> and in our welcome for newcomers.\u00a0 Our <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/profile\/friends-of-the-research-group-on-manuscript-evidence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Friends of the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence<\/a> gather this community.<\/p>\n<p>Our interests embrace many materials and fields of study, ranging from book culture, book history, library history, art history, palaeography, textual transmission, and linguistics, to archival studies, conservation, archaeology, and forensics.<\/p>\n<p>Although our individual experiences and forms of expertise perforce differ (for example through the pre-determined conditions of birth order), we seek to foster discourse and feedback across disciplines and generations, with the aim of strengthening and refining knowledge overall.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5008\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/DSC_0552.-Bk-of-Hours-leaf-recto-on-beige-mat-cropped-adjusted.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5008\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5008 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/DSC_0552.-Bk-of-Hours-leaf-recto-on-beige-mat-cropped-adjusted-1024x390.png\" alt=\"Floral border below the text of a Book of Hours on a detached leaf. Call it Double Vision.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><strong>Welcome<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We invite you to join our activities, and become a Sponsor or Donor of our work and mission.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manuscriptevidence.org\/contributions-and-donations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Contributions and Donations<\/a> \u2014 both in funds and in kind \u2014 enable our activities to continue.<\/p>\n<p>The Research Group is a recognized Section 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization, in the form of a corporation.\u00a0 It is devoted to &#8220;lectures, discussions, and other forms of publications&#8221;.\u00a0 Donations to its mission may thus be tax-deductible.<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, the Group continues its activities and most of its managerial obligations as a nonprofit educational corporation only through voluntary contributions, by which no Officer receives a salary.\u00a0 Moreover, so far, there is only a slender endowment.\u00a0 The donations in time, expertise, and materials ensure that the overheads for the organization are kept to an exemplary minimum.<\/p>\n<p>This principle and practice means that your donations \u2014 in funds and in kind \u2014 can help to sustain, to a great extent, the activities for which our organization is dedicated. All our Booklets are freely available for download on this site. See our<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/profile\/publications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Publications<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In 2024 the Group celebrated its 25th\/35th anniversaries with a pair of <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/2024-spring-and-autumn-symposia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spring and Autumn Symposia<\/a> and other related events and publications. See, for example,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>our <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/rgme-activities-for-2024-and-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Activities for 2024 and 2025<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Over the years, the range of interests and activities of the Group has expanded to address many forms of manuscript and other evidence across the centuries.\u00a0 Our activities and this website with our blogs illustrate these interests.<\/p>\n<p>Please explore the items on our <strong>Menu<\/strong> to learn about our history, origins, and aims; our officers, organization, associates, and volunteers; and our activities, which include meetings, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/profile\/photographic-exhibitions-and-masterclasses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">photographic exhibitions<\/a>, research projects, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/profile\/publications\/\" target=\"_blank&quot;\" rel=\"noopener\">publications<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0Our conference sessions, both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/profile\/sponsored-sessions-at-the-international-congress-on-medieval-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sponsored<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/profile\/sponsored-sessions-at-the-international-congress-on-medieval-studies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">co-sponsored<\/a>, usually occur at the Annual <a href=\"http:\/\/wmich.edu\/medieval\/congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Congress on Medieval Studies<\/a> at Kalamazoo, Michigan, and sometimes elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Our meetings in many centers take the form of lectures, master classes, interviews, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/profile\/seminars-workshops-colloquia-and-symposia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">symposia, colloquia, seminars, workshops<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/congress-activities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conference activities<\/a>. Our blogs report developments and discoveries. Our online or hybrid events include our series <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/the-research-group-speaks-the-series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;The Research Group Speaks&#8221;<\/a>, Workshops on <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscriptevidence.org\/wpme\/rgme-workshops-on-the-evidence-of-manuscripts-etc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;The Evidence of Manuscripts, Etc.&#8221;<\/a>, and visits to collections.<\/p>\n<p>The variety of formats allows for flexible planning for different sizes of audience, locations, subjects, and styles of presentation, with opportunities for discussion.
