The Research Group on Manuscript Evidence, in keeping with the MMLA conference’s theme of “Duality, Doubles, and Doppelgängers” for the 2019 Convention in Chicago, sponsors a panel on duality in manuscripts, broadly conceived.

Following the conclusion of our Call for Papers for the Panel, we announce its Program.

“A Text Twice Born: Exploring the Origin of a Scientific Manuscript”

Namely the treatise on hydrodynamics by Abbé Edme Mariotte (1620–1684), posthumously published in French in 1686, with a second edition in French in 1700, and with an English translation in 1718 by John Theophilus Desaguliers.  Morgan’s paper introduces a manuscript of another English translation, dated apparently to 1690, also with illustrations.

The Research Group on Manuscript Evidence, in keeping with the MMLA conference’s theme of “Duality, Doubles, and Doppelgängers” for the 2019 Convention in Chicago, is sponsoring panels on duality in manuscripts broadly conceived.

Information about the conference appears on the MMLA website: MMLA Convention.

For our panels, possible senses of duality include, strictly by way of example, textual variants, recensions, and copies.  It also includes more figurative senses of duality, like the dialectic between text and marginal glosses.

We invite all approaches — including hermeneutical, textual, art historical, codicological, and paleographical — as well as all time periods. Despite the RGME’s traditional medieval focus, which has expanded, not least through these panels at the MMLA, we declare that all proposals considering the material evidence contained in handwritten documents are warmly welcomed.

The Research Group on Manuscript Evidence, in keeping with the M-MLA’s theme of “Consuming Cultures” for its 2018 Convention, sponsors a panel on the “Consumption of Manuscripts”.  After the completion of the Call for Papers, we now announce the Program for the Panel, which will take place on 15 November. The Program for the Convention in full is now available in preview through the M-MLA website: 2018 Program Booklet.

Food for Thought

In our design for the Panel, both in its proposal (as circulated in the Call for Papers) and in the selected design for its Program, we recognize that consideration of “consumption” can be literal, metaphorical, or both.  For example, the process and product could mean the destruction wrought by bookworms, fires, and biblioclasts, and/or the consumption effected by textual transmission and reception more broadly.

Accordingly, we have invited all approaches, including textual, art historical, codicological, and paleographical.  Also invite subjects from all periods.  Nice.

Distributing Cognition and Its Reception through Paratextual Apparatus in Print and Manuscript Culture”

Its first part comes from the letter by John Donne (1572–1631) to Robert Ker (1570? – 1650), wherein he included his manuscript of Biathanatos, while instructing Ker to “publish it not, but yet burn it not, and between those do what you will with it” (Gosse, 2:124).  In this letter, Donne places his writing between the rigid visual fixity of print ([“Press”]) and the complete destruction of his words in the manuscript ([“the Fire”]), and asks Ker to use his “discretion” (“do what you will with it”) to guard against the potential misreading by readers.  The second part refers to Edwin Hutchins’s 1995 study of maritime navigation, Cognition in the Wild, which argues that cognition is “always situated in a complex sociocultural world” (Hutchins, page xiii) and that “thinking and action occur as individuals mobilize a range of external resources and representations” (xii).

Viewing Donne and Hutchins at the trans-epochal threshold of cognition/knowledge-making and its distribution and reception from writer to reader, I seek to examine how Donne’s misgivings about a potential loss of his actual voice in manuscript predictively signal readers’ mental activities occurring during their print-oriented, socially-networked reading — the process to which Hutchings’s cognitive systems, composed of multiple social agents in the material world, can be applied.  For both writers provoke an epistemic dialectics of textual reading as culturally-constituted, collaborative activities (writing and publishing manuscripts, and their paratextual apparatus such as title pages, prefaces, images), impacting on the reader’s thinking, knowing, and interpreting outside the writer’s manuscript culture.

By also analyzing title pages of Quarto 1 and Quarto 2 of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, I exemplify how their paratextual apparatus transmits the play’s central message which  Shakespeare’s, as well as our contemporary, readers will receive collaboratively from the “discrete” dialogue between writer and reader, between a manuscript text and its paratextual apparatus.

In “The Convent of Pleasure” by Margaret Cavendish (1623-1673), Duchess of Newcastle, the play’s protagonist Lady Happy, finding herself her father’s sole heir, proposes to encloister herself with “so many Noble Persons of my own Sex, as my Estate will plentifully maintain, such whose Births are greater then their Fortunes, and are resolv’d to live a single life and vow Virginity” (2.2).  Lady Happy’s rationale for this is that it is impossible for a woman to be happy in marriage, since under the contemporary legal doctrine of Coverture, a wife not only surrendered her wealth to her husband, but her very selfhood was legally consumed as well.

Lady Happy, consequently, removes both herself and a coterie of similar wellborn women from a system of economic exchange in which an aristocratic women serves simply as the financial instrument by which wealth and power may pass from a hegemonic male to his heir. The fourth act of the play interrupts the otherwise subversive thrust of the play to present a reimagined fertility ritual accompanied by a pair of verse passages written by William Cavendish (1592–1676), 1st Duke of Newcastle, that serve to reinscribe the very system of aristocratic marriage that the rest of the play seeks to complicate: coats of arms are offered up as the prize for the maypole dance, and “holy Hymen’s Law” is reinstated and reinforced (4.1).

Unlike the 1662 edition of the play, the 1668 edition, as attested by Chicago, Newberry Library, Case Y 135.N43, explicitly ascribes authorship of these passages via a pair of pasted-down strips of paper imprinted with “VVritten by my Lord Duke.”  Other extant copies of the 1668 edition preserve this feature along with a sequence of hand-corrections throughout the volume.

This paper will examine these and other codicological features, including an interruption in the regular quire construction at the play’s fourth act, to argue that the 1668 edition’s explicit attribution of authorship of these verse passages is tied to shifts in William Newcastle’s political fortunes and a renewed need to be seen to curb his wife’s literary aspirations, which were understood as a form of marital unchastity that diminished the Duke’s social reputation.

Our 2017 Panel

With the accomplishment of the 2017 M-MLA Convention in Cincinnati, we happily report the Permanent Panel which the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence sponsored, in the second year of its participation at the Convention. As this participation continues to build, we create a Page devoted to the Panels at the M-MLA Convention, along with our many Activities and Events.

Like last year’s pair of sponsored Panels, described in our 2016 M-MLA Report, this year’s Panel was expertly organized by our Associate Justin Hastings of Loyola University Chicago, institutional host of the Midwest Modern Language Association.

The plan for our 2017 Panel arose in responding to the theme chosen for the 2017 Convention, “Artists and Activists”. Naturally, we selected the themes of “Artists, Activists, and Manuscript Evidence”, which might include, or also include, printed books and other forms of written materials.  Our Call for Papers invited contributions for multiple subjects and approaches, including textual, art-historical, codicological, and palaeographical, which might center upon facets, or stages, of the material evidence of manuscripts in their travels across time and space.  The variety of responses to the Call shaped the Program for the Panel, as announced in the Convention Program Book and for our 2017 M-MLA Panel.  Updates for our Announcement soon provided the Abstracts for the 3 papers, also with some images.

Following the successful Call for Papers, we announce the program for our sponsored Panel at the 2017 Convention of the M-MLA. Organized by Justin Hastings, this panel forms the second year of our participation at the Annual Convention of the M-MLA. Last year’s pair of panels, organized by Justin, are described in the 2016 M-MLA Report.

The panel planned for the 2017 Convention explores a comparably broad range of subjects. In keeping with the 2017 M-MLA Convention’s theme of “Artists and Activists,” the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence sponsors a panel on manuscripts and printed books and the illuminators, scribes, editors, and other artists who created them and the scholars and readers who used or disseminated them. The session explores multiple subjects and approaches, including textual, art historical, codicological, and paleographical.

“The Coronation Roll of Edward IV and Its Audience”

Abstract:

My paper will focus on the artwork on the Chronicle of the History of the World from Creation to Woden, with a Genealogy of Edward IV (Free Library of Philadelphia, Lewis 201), otherwise known as the ‘Coronation Roll’, to see what its content reveals about possible audiences. The Roll was commissioned circa 1461 by Edward IV, who needed to legitimise his usurpation of the English throne from Henry VI in order to gain the support of both the English nobility and international noble (and royal) audiences. I will argue that the artists of the Coronation Roll appealed to both sets of audiences through the creative use of traditional iconographies of kingship within the genealogical format. After emphasising the common use of genealogies among the nobility, both at home and abroad, I will examine three key artistic clues within the Coronation Roll:

  • the strong emphasis on Edward’s personal heraldry and badges, which line the Roll and are intertwined with the genealogical table, included to appeal to the nobility’s sense of heritage and lineage;
  • Edward’s equestrian portrait, which echoes similar portraits found on seals, coins, and manuscripts across Europe;
  • and the inclusion of emblems such as the Order of the Garter, which would have been familiar to an international noble audience.

I will conclude by assessing available evidence to determine how the Roll might have been displayed for the visual consumption of his audience.

“Native American Misrepresentation in Early America:
A Study on the Variants Presented in Conrad Weiser’s Travel Narrative:
A Journal of the Proceedings of Conrad Weiser”

Abstract:

The Native American translator and colonial government official Conrad Weiser (1696 – 1760) is an often-overlooked figure in Early American history. As a translator for the Pennsylvanian government, Weiser occupied a unique position in both colonial America and the Iroquois nation.  Conrad Weiser’s state-sponsored travel narrative, “A journal of the proceedings of Conrad Weiser: on his journey to Ohio with a message & present from the government of Pensilvania to the Indians there, 1748 Aug. 11 – Oct. 2”, exists in four separate versions.  By applying a critical lens to the text, this paper will illuminate the significant changes between its versions, particularly by examining the representation of the Sinicker tribe of the Iroquois nation.

This paper will carefully outline the variants that occur over the four versions of Weiser’s travel narrative:

  • Weiser’s original manuscript written in 1748,
  • a copy of Weiser’s journal transcribed by his descendent Hiester Muhlenberg in 1830,
  • a copy of Weiser’s journal proceedings published in the Colonial Records of Pennsylvania in 1851,
  • and a reproduction of Weiser’s journal proceedings published in 1847 in I.D. Rupp’s Early history of western Pennsylvania: and of the West, and of western expeditions and campaigns from MDCCLIV to MDCCCXXXIII.

By examining these four versions simultaneously, it is evident that Conrad Weiser’s interactions with Queen Scayhuhady of the Sinicker tribe were omitted in the later versions of his document, the official colonial record book and historical book of Pennsylvania.
I will argue for a restoration of Weiser’s original 1748 travel-narrative in order to re-establish historical accuracy and to include the interactions with the Sinicker tribe omitted from later historical documents and records.  This paper will attempt to answer questions of how and when changes were introduced to Weiser’s narrative and to outline themes between each set of variants that occur, as well as their importance to a modern reader.

“ ‘It’s amazing what you can see when you look’:
New Light on Old Manuscripts Dispersed by Otto Ege”

Just as Yogi Berra’s catchy turns of phrase encourage, or, for that matter, require, us to think, as well as rethink, so, too, does the process of looking, and looking again (even again and again), have the power to conjure forth fresh views, insights, and understandings.  The term ‘conjure’ here may convey some of the steps, skills, and wondrous results in that process — when it works — of close interaction between the scholar, viewer, beholder and the materials in question.

In this case, we consider the potential for medieval (and other) manuscripts of many kinds, dates, genres, subjects, patterns of transmission, and challenges in general or particular.  All the more so when accomplished cumulatively, with assembled, tested, and refined expertise, whereby, fortunately and ‘magically’, the total gain is far greater than the sum of the parts.

This paper reports new, also cumulative and collaborative, discoveries concerning some of the vast numbers of leaves detached and dispersed from their former manuscripts by the notorious bibliophile and self-styled ‘biblioclast’ Otto F. Ege (1888‒1951), whose spheres of activity mostly centered upon Cleveland.  In the past few years, as my own tasks of conservation and research regarding telling cases of those manuscript ‘strays’ or ‘orphans’, seemingly unrelated, turn out to be related powerfully in terms of linked or implicated transmission, discerned by means of discovery through expertise gathered cumulatively over the years, across a broad range of written and printed materials.

Our celebration of these rediscoveries may include fresh observations of materials close to Otto Ege’s home base. Surprises await when we look.

The Research Group on Manuscript Evidence, in keeping with the 2017 M-MLA Convention’s theme of “Artists and Activists,” is sponsoring panels on manuscripts and printed books and the illuminators, scribes, editors, and other artists who created them and the scholars and readers who used them. The session invites all approaches, including textual, art historical, codicological, and paleographical.

Possible foci include but are by no means limited to:

  • Scriveners, the Book Trade, and Early Modern Printed Editions
  • Textual Transmission and Reception: Inscribing Alterity and Change
  • On the Margins: Glosses, Illustrations, and Illuminations

Interested panelists should send brief abstracts of no more than 300 words to the organizer by 5 April 2017:

A New Tradition

Reproduced by permission.For information about the Events of the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence, to which these Sponsored Panels belong, please see our Events and Events Archive.  For convenience, we distinguish between these Events elsewhere and our many Congress Activities over the years at the Annual International Congress on Medieval Studies, likewise with a Congress Archive, held at Western Michigan University each May in Kalamazoo.

Our Associate, Justin Hastings, generously offered to organize panels for the 2016 M-MLA Convention to be sponsored by the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence. The Call for Papers yielded not one, but two panels, with contributions spanning a wide range of materials, texts, periods, and regions. These sponsored panels represented the first time, apart from the Kalamazoo Congress, that the Research Group sponsored meetings within an existing conference held in North America, although we have co-organized and co-sponsored Events afresh in various centers in North America and elsewhere, as described in the Events Archive.

The plan to sponsor the 2017 Panels follows our first appearance as a Sponsor at the 2016 M-MLA Convention — with 2 Panels on Marginalia in Manuscripts and Books in response to the Call for Papers for 1 Panel alone. See the 2016 M-MLA Report for these Panels, with the published Abstracts of the Papers and a view of the Posters.

The continuation of the tradition of Permanent Panels at the M-MLA Convention is most welcome, and we thank our organizer, Justin Hastings, and the Midwest Modern Language Association.  We congratulate Justin for his expert organizational skills and outstanding collegiality, and we applaud his willingness to continue to organize the panels for the Research Group on Manuscript Evidence.

Another First

This year, responding gladly to Justin’s initiative, we issue a Poster for the Call for Papers.

Up to now, our Posters in recent years have accompanied our Congress Activities and Symposia, Colloquia, Workshops, and the like.  Circulated at those events or activities, the Posters now illustrate the Pages or Posts devoted to them on our website.  Also, a Gallery illustrates the sequence of our Posters on Display. They exemplify aspects of our multiple Layout Designs, which have a Gallery as well.

Sometimes, we issued a Poster for the Save-the-Date Announcement of an approaching Symposium.   Those specimens likewise appear in the Poster Gallery.  However, this is the first time for a Poster for the Call for Papers.  Nice!

The Research Group on Manuscript Evidence, in keeping with the M-MLA conference’s theme of “Border States,” sponsored its pair of Special Session Panels examining materials in North American collections. The responses to the Call for Papers for our sponsored Special Session yielded two panels rather than one, and extended their scope both temporally and geographically.

The subjects, and their range, accord well with the Research Group’s long-term interest in the physical characteristics of books, their modes of production, and their processes of use across time. The subject of “Marginalia in Manuscripts” formed the focus of one of the Seminars on “The Evidence of Manuscripts” in our early years based in the Parker Library of Corpus Christi College. Our blog on “Manuscript Studies” — plus some printed books — includes reports of discoveries grounded in close analysis of their surfaces, marginalia often included.

Do we practice what we preach? Well, we prefer to refrain from writing in books belonging to others, as we recommend to you, but our own pages? That might be different. Witness the Master Copy of the Invitation Letter to that Seminar (see here). Marginalia Lives On!

This Report for CARA (Committee on Centers and Regional Associations of the Medieval Academy of America) has appeared in its 2016 June Newsletter (page 13).  We are glad to be part of the organization.

Like last year, this year our Director attended the Annual CARA Meeting, which regularly follows the Medieval Academy of America Annual Meeting.  This year it took place in Boston.

The Report of our Group’s activities for 2015–2016 is now published in the CARA Newsletter, for which we thank Lisa Fagin Davis (our Associate), Executive Director of the Medieval Academy, and her staff.  We congratulate Lisa, shown at its closing Reception, for the success of the 2016 Meeting in Boston.
